Description

Facebook has disabled the official City of New Haven page (facebook.com/cityofnewhaven) because it cannot distinguish between the geographic entity (New Haven, Connecticut) and the government entity (City of New Haven). While other city governments across the country have been allowed to maintain official City pages, the City of New Haven has been blocked. Admittedly late to the social media game, the City's official Facebook page had been steadily growing its audience and had attracted nearly 1,000 followers. Just yesterday, with the help of Alderman Doug Hausladen, a good conversation had started about the merits of the new parking meters. The City recognizes that not everyone has time to attend public hearings, Mayor's Night Out or Mayor's Night In. It is important to employ as many methods as possible to allow residents to communicate with their government. That includes traditional methods like knocking on doors and posting flyers, but that increasingly also includes tools like SeeClickFix, Facebook, Constant Contact and Twitter. By disabling the City of New Haven's Facebook page, Facebook is doing the residents of New Haven a disservice. Please ask Facebook to reinstate the City of New Haven Facebook page.
