Description

I work in Stamford Pl and walk along State St to the train station nightly. The congestion along State St heading towards Washington is BAD and it can take several light cycles to get through the intersection some evenings. Tonight the drivers decided to take matters into their own hands. At approx 5:38pm I had the pedestrian signal at State St / Washington, with traffic stopped in ALL directions for 35 seconds since it's a large intersection. But the cars waiting on State St decided to ignore the red lights and go straight through anyway, crossing Washington. 30+ cars, shuttle buses and even a CT Transit but crossed that huge intersection on a solid red light, with the pedestrian light activated. Think about that for a second, if you know that intersection. It was chaotic and very dangerous, as it was dark and raining outside. Can we PLEASE get some police presence here, if for no other reason than pedestrians cannot safely cross, even when we have the walk signal! We also really need traffic control of the shuttle bus area, to prevent buses backing up and blocking the intersection. No one is controlling the flow at night (not tonight, anyway), and this is partly what's causing State St to back up all the way past Greenwich Ave!
