I really wish they'd fix it. Anything to deter speeding on this road would be great. Too many folks cutting lanes through turns, squeezing out cyclists, almost hitting cars that are trying to enter and exit drives. Not to mention it is actually a residential street. There are children who play here. Never see OPD here like I do on upper Park.
Adding a few stop signs along this strip of Park blvd would create safer traffic speeds for local residents; It's nearly impossible to cross the Blvd as a pedestrian without having to run and I highly doubt a SLOW DOWN flashing 25 mph sign makes much of an impact.
I agree with Hollyce. Since the signals went in at 21st and also Newton, drivers speed up to "make the signals. We live on Park, two doors down from this sign and it never did any good when it was on. There needs to be pedestrian crosswalks at Haddon so we can cross safely (or more safely) when we have to move our cars twice a week to avoid $80 tickets. My husband uses a cane and we are not as fast on our feet these days. Please slow down the traffic at this part of Park Blvd. Judi
Exactly. This is a serious safety issue that's long overdue for being addressed. I live directly on Park as well and between the speeding cars and folks parking in red zones blocking the view, it can be frustrating and dangerous to navigate in and out of my drive, let alone just drive on the road itself. Forget trying to be a pedestrian or a cyclist on this street. You're playing chicken out there with vehicles traveling 50+mph! I've had police cars blow me off while waiting in a crosswalk!
I'm surprised with the high school being so close that the traffic isnt enforced more. They have been cycling the light at E 33rd more and that has helped a bit but yes people are running reds and I imagine they'll roll through stop signs if they think they can. However I'd love to see more stops signs, maybe speed bumps, bike lanes, anything to slow it down. Drop the limit to 25mph if needed and enforce it. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.
I'd love to get a way for a group of us to submit something together to bring this issue to a greater attention, but I'm not familiar with all of the city players and channels to go through. Ideas, anyone?
I wonder what the cost difference is between having a stop sign put in place vs stop lights? Seriously... A stop sign is the most affordable and effective solution for slowing traffic down. I also think making Park Blvd one lane of driving traffic each direction with bike lanes is an AWESOME idea. If the city of Oakland can do this all around Lake Merritt, why not up park Blvd. the rewards for are HUGE!
In Alameda (on Park Street) they have pedestrian crosswalks with lights that illuminate when someone wants to cross. There is a request button and when pressed, the crosswalk lights up in the street and alerts oncoming drivers. A stop sign would also be good as if someone hits the lights right they are going 50 mph by the time they reach 5th Ave.
In a meeting last March, we were told by the city not to expect this type of crosswalk improvement because it is 1. Too expensive and 2. The lights break and need regular replacement. We were told that there would be one major crosswalk on Grand which would be reconstructed with a center island and larger signs and paint - there was only enough $$ for one - and other crosswalks to be named by neighborhood groups (we identified these in the meeting) would get new distinctive paint and larger signs on each side of Grand - this has not happened - timeline was sometime between March and "Fall" - well November is almost here. We were shown a very detailed plan for improvement but apparently this has fallen by the wayside, along with the two pedestrians who were injured or killed at Bellevue last Xmas time.
The East Bay Bicycle Coalition had been working on this plan if anyone hasn't heard already. Submit your input to them. I'm not affiliated with them, but I've read it over think it's a great idea.
1) The city has plan to put bike lanes on Park Blvd to link up with other business districts and on
traffic calming.
2) New traffic lights cost about $200,000 from soft reports to construction.
3) 25 MPH signal should be fixed to alarm drivers that go over the limit. Most drivers do obey the laws
especially when they realize that they are over the speed limit and could get a ticket.
My downhill cruising speed from upper Park Blvd around Oakland High without stepping on the gas
is 25-30 MPH.
4) There is only (2-3) 25 MPH signs from Oakland High to E-18th St - We need more signs on both
sides of the Blvd, and with penalty posted - I think $200?
5) Most of the people are "regulars" driving up and down Park Blvd, meaning most of them including
myself (from time to time) are guilty for speeding. We need to be more considered, for our
neighbors and the pedestrians trying to cross the crosswalks.
6) For a quick fix on the speeding problem, we can contact OPD Traffic Control Unit to
start to ticket speeders.
7) We hope that if we could do all of the above + the suggestions you gave, we can expect some
improvement. At least, change the habit of the "regulars" from keep speeding. We can only hope
the other who drive through will obey the laws too.
