  • State House Neighborhood Providence, RI - Downtown

Ugly graffiti, some gang related, has recently sprouted unchecked along Providence Place and Promenade Street, and emboldened taggers have now begun to hit the side streets lining these areas. The City MUST hold property owners responsible for removing graffiti-- it is completely out of control.

Update: As predicted, graffiti has spread to side streets, on signs, utility poles, buildings, walls, and basically everywhere. The cold has not deterred the spread. The City does nothing to abate it in this area.

  • 72 Jewett St Providence, RI 02908, USA - Smith Hill
An old garage collapsed in the lot of two old mill houses on Jewett Street this winter. Most of the resultant debris has not been removed by the property owner. It is hazardous and a blight, and it has been this way for months.
  • 114 Holden St Providence, RI 02908, USA - Smith Hill
There was a fire in the garage of an SRO on the corner of Smith and Holden Streets over a month ago. A melted trash can and several burnt doors have been left on the street for weeks, and are neither picked up by trash haulers nor disposed of by the owner.
  • 104-134 Smith St Providence, RI 02903, USA - Downtown
I recently spent about 45 minutes standing in front of the RI State House, and watched traffic approach and negotiate the pedestrian speed bump/ walkway there. I was shocked to see that (a) many cars were not stopping for pedestrians, and (b) some cars were not slowing down sufficiently to safely negotiate the speed bump (one SUV even literally sped over it and launched itself airborne for 20 feet, landing hard). The slow down signage that was once painted on the road is either not visible or needs to be repainted to make it more noticeable. Also, some more signage warning motorists to slow as they approach would help. I worry that those people crossing outside of the crosswalk (and many do) are endangered. Seems like a good use of paint and signage to me.
  • U.S. 44 Providence, RI 02908, USA - Smith Hill

**Update: This obviously will not become an issue again until next fall, but it should be researched (who is responsible) and fixed before then.

Original message: Many, many pedestrians use the Smith Street overpass over 95 to get to the train station, mall, or State House. However, no one ever clears the ice and snow from the sidewalks. Several times this winter I saw people slip and fall on the ice/ snow, and sometimes this forced pedestrians into the more dangerous street. The City should clear this area as a matter of public safety, even if the state is technically responsible. Thank you.

  • Holden St Between Promenade And Smith Streets Providence, RI 02908, USA - Smith Hill

Update: the edges of the patches have begun to erode into potholes, pavement is uneven, huge sunken divots make driving challenging, and the street is heavily travelled as a cut through by those seeking to avoid the mall.

Original: Lower Holden Street (between Smith and Promenade) has been dug up and patched so many times that the following conditions exist: huge patched divots causing cars to bottom out; potholes; frost heaves; cracked pavement. The entire street should be repaved as soon as possible. Also, parking laws are not enforced, making driving difficult.

  • 87-149 Providence Pl Providence, RI 02903, USA - Smith Hill

This street has been patched following utility work, and it has developed potholes. The City keeps temporarily patching them, but what is actually needed is repair. It's a high traffic area, leading to the Mall.

Update: Most of the problem has been fixed (thank you), but NOT the long, sunken patch that starts just before the first highway overpass, after the end of Harris Avenue. This should be fixed to prevent cars from swerving out of their lane when they encounter it.

  • Intersection Of Holden And Jewett Streets Providence, RI - Smith Hill
There is a very large and growing divot at the intersection of Holden and Jewett streets where the pavement appears to be caving in. The cause is probably incessant digging and repaving at that location. The divot is dangerous to both pedestrians and cars, and it should be repaired asap.
  • Across Jewett Street From House 24 on highway embankment but facing dead end - Smith Hill
The street light here has been dark for more than one year. Repeated complaints to councilman have resulted in no improvement.
