Description

All day on Sunday, cars park illegally in front of No Parking signs, bus stop signs, and even fire hydrants. These cars are parked illegally all over Person, Edenton, and Morgan Streets. There are even police officers standing around NOT ticketing these cars! I saw a CAT bus dropping people off in the middle of the road that needed to be dropped off on the sidewalk, and then a bicyclist had to go around the CAT bus and almost got hit by traffic because he couldn't stay to the right of the road.

What happens if there is a fire and the hydrant is blocked? This is a huge safety issue, and it seems like these concessions are only made for church-goers, but shouldn't they have to use the City parking garages like all other citizens? Why is this issue not being addressed?

+1000. I have posted similar complaints here as well. Unless there some deep buried law allowing no parking to be ignored around houses of worship on Sunday, they should be tagged and towed. I have seen similar nightmare traffic scenarios.

Thanks for reporting this. Posting this on SCF on a Sunday does very little to help this issue. We don't have staff monitoring SCF on Sunday. Please call 911 to report this when it happens. We will let the police know about this.

We aren't posting this on a Sunday on SCF ..... this is a parking violation issue that even the police department will not address. Should it be taken to the City Council? Who is responsible for parking illegally, is that not something SCF can at least point in the right direction?

It happens EVERY Sunday. All the police have to do is send an officer out on any Sunday morning. That's the whole point.

Thanks for your post and we acknowledge that this was not reported on Sunday. Our bad on that oversight. The Police know about this and will be providing us some information. The Council Member for this district is Eugene Weeks.

I have an update. After a near miss accident this morning, I opted to call the non-emergency line to ask the police to review. As it turns out, there is a code that allows for this type of parking. I was told Sec. 11-2172 of the code refers to making this legal. Also parking in a no parking zone is protected by city code on Sunday's.
"No Parking Zones."
(Code 1959 , §21-34(e))

When signs are erected or painted on the street giving notice thereof, no person shall at any time, except during church services on Sundays, or other times designated in official Traffic Schedule No. 13, park any vehicle within the areas designated as "no parking" zones

The parking in the other areas mentioned need to be reported to the Police, via 911, immediately so that they can address the issue.

Thanks for clarifying. Does this also apply to parking in front of fire hydrants on Sundays too? I would think that public/fire safety should never be compromised, regardless of a Sunday parking exception for churchgoers.

Neighbor, thanks for your comments. It is still illegal to park in front of a fire plug. When residents notice this they should call 911 to report this so staff can address this.
