Speed bumps may be the best solution..

The problem with speed bumps is that everyone is punished along with the culpables, including the residents. And drivers screech up to them, and then gun their motors after them. I believe there is a method of laying two cables across the road to detect speed, connected to trigger a camera, that registers when the wheels pass over the two cables. There must be high-tech methods. At the very least, a patrol car could park on the street once in a while to catch offenders, which would send a message that you might be caught. As it is, everyone knows that you can violate every traffic law in New Haven and you'll never get caught.

Nothing has been done to slow the traffic on Ellsworth Ave between Whalley and Goffe. I was promised that a patrol car would be stationed to monitor the speeds, but I don't believe it was done, as there is no reduction in speed. Even the school buses fly down this block at around 45 mph. Still dangerous. I've been on this issue now for a couple of years.

Get the school bus number and call the company.

I tried emailing First Student company once before about their aggressive drivers, and never got a response. I doubt if they care. If the police will do nothing about speeding, and blocking intersections and causing gridlock, this bus company is not going to police itself.

Call First Student,the board of education and your alderperson.

As I've written before, our alderperson Jill Marks never replies to anything. Worthless. OK, I'll try the board of Ed., but not hopeful about that. Doubt that they're concerned about traffic.

This needs the attention of the police department. Until they show an interest, XYZ, I think none of your suggestions are useful. I have emailed them, mailed letters to them, called them, and talked with them in person. After all that, I tried this seeclickfix forum. Any better suggestions, not boilerplate?

For the most part the police do not monitor this site, case in point this was first posted two months ago and it has yet to be acknowledged. You can call the mayor's office 203 946-8200 on Monday and I would also keep calling the police district manger, bus department, and alderperson, the squeaky wheel gets the grease,

Actually, the police got back to me about a month ago, after I called the district manager, but still no action even though they promised. If no one in authority is monitoring this site, why am I bothering to use the site. I'm using it as a newfound venue, because I've already exhausted everything you suggest. XYZ, are you a robot? Your replies seem canned. Although I know that PR people also sound this way. Just curious.

Certain departments monitor this site some don't. As you can see no department has acknowledged your post. You can use this site to inform others of a problems and get some insight on how to handle a problem.

The police came one day and stopped four drivers. Haven't heard any more from them. But the hundreds of others who speed through here everyday did not get the message, because it's the same. We need continual monitoring.

I completely agree. Now that the weather is warm there are three wheeler flying through that block at night. I hate crossing either Ellsworth or Goffe because sometimes people will make a turn without signaling.

Still no change in the speeding, just as throughout New Haven, and there never will be change until there are police patrolling the streets and cameras at the intersections. No one in power in this city seems to have the will to stop this, even as people die at the intersections. When there is no law enforcement, people will be lawless.

This morning I watched a parade of tow trucks, led by a New Haven police car, speeding down Bellevue Rd. Most of the tow trucks sped through the stop sign, a few of them slowed down a little. I guess that the urgency was to tow cars parked on the wrong side of the street (street sweeping) for the sweepers that showed up a couple of hours later. This shows some really messed up priorities.

I especially love the loud music they play early in the morning while waiting to tow a neighbor's car. You'd think people would hear the truck coming and have time to jump in their car and move it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

More than five years later, and nothing has been done to slow down traffic. In fact, it's gotten worse all throughout the city. We did not defund the police, as far as I know. One problem now is, with everyone having GPS, it is sending drivers (including trucks) down these residential streets as short cuts, whereas, before, drivers used the main routes. Again, we need some -- any -- traffic police to actually stop violators. It may seem daunting, with nearly everyone violating, but that is because the police have stopped stopping violators for so long now that everyone knows they will get away with it. It started with police actually refusing to stop cellphone violators.Once they get back to patrolling the streets again, I guarantee you that violations will diminish. Cameras and speed bumps would help. I'd like to be able to walk across the street at Whalley without fearing for my life.
