Description

How about a renewed safety campaign and police presence and enforcement in busy Davis Square to help ensure pedestrian safety? With the nicer weather here and workers, shoppers and diners out and about, Davis Sq is busy with pedestrian and car traffic. It is not safe to cross the streets to get lunch on a lunch break, walk to work or to the train, or run other errands in the square. Traffic does not stop for pedestrians in the crosswalks, sometimes at all, even as pedestrians make their way across the crosswalk. Today, a young woman driver was texting or looking at her cell phone in her hand. She did not look up to see several pedestrians in the crosswalk, including a mother with a baby in a stroller. She did stop short in the crosswalk after people motioned and yelled to her to stop. She seemed offended that people were upset with her for her failure to pay attention while driving through a busy area. That is just the example for today, this is a daily occurrence. It would be shameful to wait for a pedestrian injury or death to bring renewed attention to this matter in Davis Sq. The amount of people present in Davis Sq all day long warrants an increased safety awareness and police presence I believe.
