We thought this might be the problem so I got the Council to put in No Stopping signs at each junction. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem as the side streets come in at an angle to Lilyfield Road which by itself makes it difficult to see past legally parked cars. The problem is worst at night as cyclists need to be seen against the street lights at the top of the hill as well as against any following motor vehicle. IMHO the only solution is for cyclists to have stronger headlights.
Some old women on the Precinct Committee want to put in speed humps to slow cyclists down. They are even thinking about putting a speed hump down the bottom of the hill immediately before the canal bridge.
The problem has become worse now that the same group has caused exiting traffic from LPAC to travel via Maliyawul and Lilyfield Roads rather than the direct route along Mary Street. Now one has to look both up the hill and down the hill before quickly pulling out into Lilyfield Road.

Cyclists should ride well out in the centre of the downhill lane too, not close to the parked cars, for better visibility from the side streets. And keep a very sharp eye out for cars at those side streets. I would advise not trying to reach terminal velocity down that hill, ie, feather the brakes as you descend, and keep speed down on approach to the bike path over the bridge too, at the bottom of the hill. Council has a long term plan for 40 K speed limit throughout the LGA, and Lilyfield Rd is an obvious road to start with.

Council has installed a speed radar displaying vehicle speeds. This has apparently led to a slight reduction in speeds. Also they have removed the downhill bike lane and put bicycle logos out in the traffic lane to encourage cyclists to ride out for better visibility from the side streets. Haven't heard of any more crashes recently.

Next problem will be if a separated two way bike path gets put in on one side or the other as part of a plan to make Lilyfield Rd into a Regional Bike route. This could be dangerous if it increases risk of descending cyclists crashing into ascending cyclists. I think commuters would prefer the current set up, with the wide uphill bike lane and share the traffic lane downhill.
