Bethany Residents,
A watch area was recently made for First Selectwoman Gorski and for Public Works Director Al Green. They are both interested using SeeClickFix to keep in touch with what's going on in the community. Due to technical issues with SeeClickFix and through no fault of the Bethany Town Government, these watch areas were made very recently. Please don't get the impression that they have been following this thread since the beginning but remained unresponsive. They will be receiving any posts and comments in the future, so we ask that you do your best to keep the comments positive and constructive.
Thanks again for working with us to help make your community a better place!

I too drive on Bethmour Road and the town should clean up this Junk Yard mess next to the Bethany School System and also fIx the large pot hole's at the end of Bethmour Road before someone get's hurt.
Bethany leaders would not let this take place 10 years ago why now?

From the Desk of the First Selectman:
It has come to my attention via the Community Manager of the “See Click Fix” website that there have been on-line complaints pertaining to a dump site and a pothole, both located on Bethmour Road in Bethany. The “See Click Fix” website, of course, has no connection to the Town of Bethany, and while information contained on the website does reach the Town, it is not though the normal course of business for complaints of this nature. I have listed below the proper contact numbers for people to call to make the Town aware of any issues they may have. By contacting the Town directly, staff and I can get details as to exactly what the issue is and ascertain pertinent facts to determine the quickest and best response. While the original complaints were placed on “See Click Fix” several weeks ago, the Town was not made aware of the complaints until fairly recently. Upon learning of the complaints, we have acted promptly. To date, no complaints pertaining to these items have been made directly to my office or to the Zoning Enforcement Office. After being made aware of the complaints on “See Click Fix”, I took immediate action and drove to the area where the newly created driveway was constructed on Bethmour Road, which is known properly as 93 Peck Road and which is owned by Bioagricultural Enterprises. My inspection revealed a stockpile of debris visible from the road as well as various other items situated further into the property. I directed Zoning Enforcement Officer Isabel Kearns to investigate. ZEO Kearns has met with the property owner, and he proposes to re-locate most items to the rear of the greenhouses by June 30, if not sooner. However, the white, plastic-wrapped bagged soil will remain in the present location. The stockpile of discarded debris set closer to the Bethmour Road will remain until the ground has dried up sufficiently enough to remove it, hopefully also by June 30. The pothole that is being discussed resulted because a curtain drain was not installed when the road was originally constructed, and this is causing subsurface water flow to undermine the integrity of the road. It is not simply a matter of repaving or patching. This drainage work and road repair has been included in the Public Works budget for Fiscal Year 2010-11 and will be done in July. For a faster response to any future complaints please contact me directly at (203) 393-2100 X100 or Zoning Enforcement Officer Isabel Kearns at (203) 393-2100 X135 or Public Works Director Al Green at (203) 393-1555.
Sincerely, Derrylyn Gorski, First Selectman

Thank you for your efforts.

TO- Derrylyn Gorski and Isadel Kearns,
As stated in Derrylyn inital reply- THE DRAINAGE WORK & ROAD REPAIR HAE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE PUBLIC WORKS BUDGET AND WILL BE DONE IN "JULY". OUR SO CALLED FIRST SELECTMAN MUST STILL BE ON VACATION AGAIN
BECAUSE IT IS NOW AUGUST -8 AND NOT ONE THING IS DONE ON THE POT HOLES AT THE END OF BETHMOUR ROAD. WE NOW HAVE POT HOLE'S GROWING TO AT LEAST A MILE LONG.
WE NEED TOWN LEADERS TO KEEP THEIR WORD
AND DO THEIR JOB THAT IS WHY WE PAY HIGH TAXES FOR!!!!!!
Bethany Walker (Guest)
And yes the pot hole problem is growing and growing and all we hear is talk from our town leaders.
Go to work fix the problem and cut our Taxes in our town so Senior Citizens do not have to sell their homes to eat and live. We need a three year wage freeze for all ( TEACHERS TOO). And a three year tax freeze for all.
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
Down Road Taxpayer (Guest)
We need workers at Town Hall not people who are in now and only care about themself's and not the Taxpayers who are over taxed and get no service
from our so called leaders. Time for a change and a change from full time to part time First Selectman....
WE ARE WITH YOU......
Bethany Old Timer (Guest)
You are right on -BETHANY WALKER-.
We need a good leader to work part time and protect
the Senior Citizens and all Taxpayers.
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
The Junk Yard look's a lot cleaner because of grow back on the land. Now the owner should landscape the area before the fall rolls in and it start'S to look bad again.
Owner take pride in you Town!!!!
Town Leaders please stay on top of this property and check it's water runoff for it is next to our SCHOOL !!!
THE POT HOLES ARE STILL GROWING AND THE ROAD IS FALLING APART!!
Bethany Walker (Guest)
YES IT IS TIME FOR A THIRD PARTY TO TAKE ON THE LEADERSHIP ROLES IN A PART TIME LEADERSHIP SEAT AND DO THE JOB RIGHT.
A three year freeze on all taxes is needed and look for ways to cut spending and save our senior citizens from selling their homes to pay town taxes that increase every year. We must all bite the Bullet and yes the teacher's need to have a three years pay freeze and pay their share like us all hard working taxpayers
do.
Down Road Taxpayer (Guest)
We must stay on top of both issues till both are fixed and fixed
right before the wells in the area have a problem and the pot holes cause a accident and the town gets a large lawsuit to fight and waste our taxpayers money......
Town Leaders do your job.......
Maybe we need Term Limit's for our full time Leader......
BETHANY TAXPAYER 51 YEARS (Guest)
JULY HAS PASSED,POT HOLES GROWING-
NOW AUGUST HAS LEFT, AND THE POT HOLES DOUBLED,
WE ARE NOW INTO SEPTEMBER AND THE POT HOLES ARE EVEN BIGGER.
( OUR FIRST SELECTMAN MUST STILL BE DOING PLOTO SHOOTS IN NEW HAVEN BECAUSE SHE STATED THE PROBLEM WOULD BE FOXED IN "JULY".
TIME FOR A PART TIME LEADER WHO CAN DO THE JOB RIGHT!!!!!
Bethany Resident (Guest)
UPSET IN TOWN (Guest)
TO- BETHANY RESIDENT- YOU ARE DEAD RIGHT- WE NEED A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP AND FOR A TOWN OF 5200 TAXPAYERS WE NEED A PART TIME LEADER WHO WILL DO THE RIGHT JOB FOR HALF THE MONEY.
WE SPEND MORE MONEY ON PATCH AND REPAIR THE POT HOLES. THE CARS DRIVING ON BETHMOUR ROAD DRIVE ON THE GRASS AND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. A ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!
A NEW ROAD AND NEW LEADERSHIP IS NEEDED NOW.
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
Two term's is all we taxpayers can take. It is time to fix the road and time for our full time selectman to resign and put in fresh young blood who will work part time and be a leader on cutting taxes, save our senior citizens homes. and keep Bethany a open clean town for our children to live in.Freeze teacher's pay for three years and have them pay more for their medical perks like we taxpayer's do.
We need a change now.

BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
TODAY IS THE ONLY DAY WE BETHANY TAXPAYERS DO NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE 18 WHEEL TRUCKS THAT GO IN AND OUT THIS JUNK YARD, BECAUSE OF THE SNOW !!!!
WHEN WILL WE GET NEW LEADERSHIP IN THIS TOWN TO DEAL WITH THIS JUNK YARD SITE. THIS IS NOT A FARM BUT A FULL TIME FOR PROFIT COMPANY THAT IS KILLING THE AREA BETWEEN PECK AND BETHMOUR ROADS
WHO IS CHECKING THE SCHOOL WELLS THAT IS RIGHT NEXT TO THIS JUNK YARD !!!
STOP KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS MESS!!
Bethany Walker (Guest)
Every day I walk our country roads and every day I put my live on the line when the large trucks come flying down the road to our "FARM JUNK SITE". I WAS ALMOST HIT LAST WEEK !!
In MAY I WILL VOTE FOR A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP !!
We taxpayers must not let companies hide behind a false zoning laws of farming when this is a for profit business. This is a total ripoff of our tax dollars.

THIS TIME GET THE VOTE OUR FOR CHANGE TO STOP A NON ACTIVE TOWN HALL.
I HAVE SEEN THE TRUCKS AND THIS IS BAD FOR BETHANY.

Bethany Grammer School Student (Guest)
I am a Bethany student who takes the bus every day to school. We drive pass a open lot at the end of Bethmour Road before going right on Peck Road.
We kid's talk about the terrible land mess we see every day and wonder why nobody in town is not cleaning up this terrible looking site in Bethany.
This site PUT A VERY POOR LIGHT on a pretty town. Why is nothing being done to clean up the cut stumps, mud, trucks, garbage, white buildings, and other junk laying around right next to our Schools and other homes?
Some one please look into fixing this mess and help Bethany look clean again.
Student's from Bethany Grammer School.
Thank You.

@Bethany Grammer School Student- I want to thank you for using SeeClickFix. Towns and cities need more involved young people like yourself. And you make an awesome point! We can talk about this issue for days, months, even a year. However, people need to work together to help resolve the issue with effective solutions. Have you thought about organizing a clean-up day in the area? You can gather your fellow students and community members to improve your community in just a couple of hours. Similarly, you can talk to your local government about what you can do to help the situation.
Keep SeeClickFixing!

Good JOB BETHANY STUDENT'S,
The children have spoken now our so called leaders must.
May election is coming and we want leaders who will act to solve our problems with this owner
and make him clean up this " JUNK YARD" NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
@mdalton89
SORRY BUT THIS IS THE TOWN LEADERS AND LAND OWNERS FAULT.
OUR LEADERS ARE DOING NOTHING ABOUT THIS '" JUNK YARD " .
IT IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE GRAMMER SCHOOL THAT HAS WELLS THAT THE CHILDREN
DRINK FROM.
THE LEADERS CALL THIS A FARM, EVERYONE ELSE CALL IT A MAJOR PROBLEM THAT THE TOWN LET HAPPEN AND LETS THIS OWNER DO WHAT EVER HE WANTS.
THIS IS A BUSNESS THAT IS RUNNING A JUNK YARD AND THE CHILDREN SEE IT(OUR FUTURE LEADERS) .
I THINK MAYBE THIS ELECTION THE CHILDREN SHOULD TAKE OVER, THEY WILL DO A BETTER JOB THEN WHAT WE HAVE NOW!!!!
MAYBE IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP AND BRING BACK THE PRIDE WE BETHANY TAXPAPER'S ONCE HAD!!!!!!!!!!!
BETHANY TAXPAYER (Guest)
GOOD QUESTION BETHANY STUDENTS!!!!!
THIS IS A QUESTION THAT SHOULD BE ANSWER BY BOTH PARTIES RUNNING FOR OFFICE IN MAY.
NO JUNK YARD'S SHOULD BE IN BETHANY PERIOD.
SORRY YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MESS EVERY DAY .
THIS LEADERSHIP WILL ONLY DO SOMETHING WHEN SOMEONE WALKING ON BETHMOUR ROAD GET'S HIT BY THE 18 WHEELER TRUCKS THAT GO IN AND OUT OF THIS SO CALLED "FARM" -NOT.
DOWN ROAD RESIDENT (Guest)
@mdalton89
If you are a ( ADMINISTRATOR ) you have not anwser the children's question.
Why do we let this happen in Bethany in the first place.
Why is their a busness next to the school.
Why do we have 18 wheeler truck going in and out of the Junk Yard Site if it is a Farm,
Why is this land owner not fined for this MESS.
??????????????
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)
TO- mdalton89-
Yes you are right -all you do is talk about this issue and you do nothing about it.
MAYBE OUR CHILDREN SHOULD RUN FOR OFFICE AND THEN SOMETHING WILL BE DONE TO CLEAN UP THIS JUNK YARD .
MAY IS COMING - TIME FOR A CHANGE - FROM TALKERS TO DOERS-
megan (Registered User)
I want to thank you all for being passionate about this issue. I didn't mean to imply that was the only thing that could be done. It was just a suggestion, and I think you all need to work together to come up with an effective solution to resolve this issue. For instance, has anyone signed up your local government to receive alerts in the area? If not, you can create a "Watch Area" for them and when something like this is reported, they will receive a notification and be aware that the issue exists. I apologize again for the initial confusion!
Keep SeeClickFixing!

OUR CURRENT LEADERS TURN A BLIND EYE AND HAVE DONE NOTHING AND WILL DO NOTHING.
MAYBE SOMEONE FROM THE LOCAL PAPERS SHOULD PUT A PICTURE IN THEIR PAPER ABOUT THE JUNK YARD SITE IN BETHANY.

THIS PROBLEM KEEP GROWING AND OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT KEEP THEIR EYES CLOSED
BETHANY OLD TIMER (Guest)

VOTE FOR A CHANGE IN MAY FOR A BETTER LIFE IN BETHANY AND NOT BE TAXED TO DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Town Hall Worker (Guest)
I know first hand that the people at town hall ( your leaders ), do not want to deal with this problem
They know that this is a land problem and some called it a junk yard also.
They keep their door closed to their office and their heads in the sand.
They just hope this matter goes away without helping the pople who pay their salary.
The children have it right. Fix this mess or get out of office.
AMITY ROAD RESIDENT (Guest)
YOU ARE RIGHT ON. MAYBE YOU WILL GET A NEW BOSS IN MAY AND OUR PROBLEM CAN BE FIXED WITH A NEW OUTLOOK AT TOWN HALL.
GOOG LUCK.

I cannot understand why the town is not making the owner of this MESS clean it up.
The children see this every day, how come the town does not fine the owner?
This should be a election issue.

Power to the grade school children. They see the mess on Bethmour Road and would like to see it
fixed. People need to start calling the town hall about this and other problems in Bethany.
i to will support a new party this election.

Dear BCS Student,
Thank you for expressing your concerns. It is refreshing to see a young person taking an interest in the town. In the future, please feel free to call me at (203) 393-2100 x100 or Zoning Enforcement Officer (ZEO) Isabel Kearns at (203) 393-2100 x135. We will be happy to answer your questions.
I also invite your teacher to call my office to schedule a visit to Town Hall for you and your classmates to meet with ZEO Kearns and I to learn more about the zoning process. We would also be happy to come to the Community School to speak to your class.
As a result of your posting, we made a follow-up visit to the property; however, I would first like to give you some background information. This property is a farm and, by Connecticut law, farms come under different rules than other properties. A farm is a commercial operation; the farmer grows plants or raises animals to sell them or their by-products to earn a living. Some farms are primarily retail, selling directly to customers; such as Clover Nook Farm or Shaggyhill Farm. Some farms are wholesale, selling only to retailers or distributors.
The 28.6 acre site in question is properly known as 93 Peck Road and was owned by the Musto family from 1955-2002. It has been farmed at least since 1957 when the first zoning permit for a garage to store farm equipment was issued. In 1963, eight (8) greenhouses were constructed on the site, and in 1965 a house was built. Two (2) additional greenhouses were constructed in 1969.
The current owner, BioAgricultural Enterprises, LLC, purchased the property in 2002. What was left of the original greenhouses was removed and new greenhouses were erected. In short, this property has been farmed, primarily in greenhouses, for decades.
WaterField Farms, a Division of BioAgricultural Enterprises, LLC is a wholesale grower of annuals and perennials and is not open to the general public. The portion of the property fronting Bethmour Road was cleared for a tree/crop planting and a new driveway. It is my understanding that vegetative cover will be introduced to the disturbed soil this summer. The berm to the north of the driveway was left intentionally to shield the abutting neighbor from noise. This area will also be covered with some type of vegetation.
Thank you for your interest in our Town and I look forward to hearing from you or your teacher soon.

Bethany Granner School Students (Guest)
Thank You for your followup on the Waterfield farm.
Our parents take us to CLOVER NOOK FARM for corn and other fresh food in the summer.
I must say with due respect that this commerical busness ( farm) can not hold a candle stick to
the other FARMS in Bethany and does not even look like one with all the mess, truck and junk around the land. We can see from our school the differance. This location looks like nobody cares how it look's and is very ugly looking. We students are also worryed about our drinking water because our school has well water and this place look's very unheality and unkeeped.
For us children and future students, you should look into this mess and future problems this
land may cause.
Thank You First Selectman for your response and hope follow up.

I want to thank the first selectwoman for acknowledging and following up on this issue. As a website designed to improve communities by working together collectively, SeeClickFix would like to emphasize the importance of respect when posting comments and issues. @mdalton89,
Maybe the people who use cap lock are mad-mad a this mess they have to live with, mad that our
first selectperson for hiding in her office and not helping the home owners and the school who has well water.
so far our selectperson only acknowledged the issue with no follow up to fix the growing problem.
Maybe you should look back and see all the post's on this issue. you have to earn respect first
and went you are a payed worker for the taxpayers in a town, you should try to help the home owner's when you have a illegal Junk Yard in their area.
Please come and see for yourself first hand and talk to the people who live with it every day.
Like a elderly lady who live's alone next to the busness and was flooded out because of illegal water run off from the Junk Yard land.
With due respect-Thank You

Living in Bethany for over 60 years and a person who love this town.
I can honestly say that this site is a Black mark on the town and not one thing has been done by our
leaders.
Been a old time Boy Scout, i learned that you have to earn respect not demand it.
No respect will come until the town leaders stand up for what is right and just and fix this long over due Mess and also the large pot holes.
Come to Bethany and see the other Farms we have then go see the Waterfield ( farm ).
Rating the farms in Bethany they all get A+. Waterfield get a F -.( and is it a farm or a busness hiding as a farm for tax breaks??????????????

I want to thank you all again for using our website to report and comment on community issues. We love residents stepping up to improve their communities. Lately, however, we have had some abuse of the system on this issue, i.e. people posting under different identities. It's great to see SeeClickFix being used in the town of Bethany! We think constructive conversation is good, especially when it's directed towards the identification, prioritization, and ultimate resolution of reported issues. That's why it's important to move the conversation forward as opposed to backwards. As a website designed to publicly address community issues, SeeClickFix would also like to emphasize the importance of respect and honesty on this forum. Unfortunately, there has been some abuse of the system on this issue, i.e. people posting under different identities, and it will be archived.
