This issue can be a challenging one for a municipality. We have to follow the guidelines set forth in the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) as well as the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) for sign placement. These guidelines state that a signs bottom edge must be at least 7’ above grade to prevent a pedestrian strike hazard. If a sign is placed below the 7’ requirement, it cannot protrude more than 4” from either side of the sign post. We strive to make the signs as easy to read as we possibly can but there are instances where we have to follow the requirements to the letter in higher hazard areas. Thank you.
