While the City understands and appreciates the sentiments and views expressed, the only violation of City Code that is present on the subject property relates to the current height of the grass. Codes Enforcement is making contact with the property owner of record to address that issue and will pursue the matter as prescribed and allowed by law.

I am reading the city code and this abandoned building clearly can be classified as an Unfit Building and a nuisance (Section 5-20). Can the city explain how this does not apply?

The subject structure is not structurally unsound or unsafe, there is nothing about its construction that is likely to cause a fire or the spreading of fire, and it is certainly not overcrowded. Further, the building is secured and does not appear to harbor vermin or disease. Thus, it does not meet the definition of a nuisance building.

The City certainly understands and is in agreement with the desire for this property to be significantly improved; be that through refurbishment or redevelopment. We are actively engaged with the property owner to encourage such activity; however, it is not an issue that we can legally force at this time.

The structure I originally referred to, is now completely covered with weeds, grass, etc. and hidden from view. I believe it is on the property of the old Col. Shirley house, and is still a public danger. I think you were referring to a different building. This one is right next to the Presbyterian church bldg.that I think is a youth center. This is still considered a hazardous bldg. in my opinion. This bldg. is obviously beyond being refurbished, etc. Please reconsider.

anyone know about white abandoned house on academy street with metal fence around it?

Rriley- the white house on academy across from Haynes bridge with the fence around it is supposed to be the "club house/activity center" for the subdivision being built between the baptist and Presbyterian churches. The development company was asked to save the house due to it being a historic home.
