Bikes do not belong on sidewalks, bike lanes or not. Sidewalks are for walkers, not bikers.

This is an urgent, ongoing problem. I have nearly been struck (from behind!!) on Prospect Street as well. While I sympathize with some cyclists--who slow their bikes to walking speed and understand that pedestrians *approached at speed from behind* might not be thinking about staying in lane(!)--there is no excuse for this very dangerous practice. In the U.K. there are not many marked bicycle lanes, but I cyclists get large fines for riding on sidewalks (and for riding without lights front and back at night). New Haven and Yale *must* crack down before there are serious (and avoidable) injuries.

This is an urgent problem. I just got a handlebar in my back on Broadway, three hours after almost being flattened by a bike shooting out from behind a truck against the light at a crosswalk. I have been almost hit by bicycles several times so far this year. The young, fit and active cyclists never seem to recognize that the older pedestrians cannot move as quickly as they do, and they are impatient, rude and cut in and out dangerously among walkers who cannot hear them coming over the traffic noise.

As a pedestrian and sometimes cyclist in New Haven, I agree this is an important issue. Unsafe and reckless sidewalk riders have no idea how scary they are to pedestrians. I think a large part of the problem is that New Haven is still dominated by cars with way too many one-way streets (making it rather hard to get around the city by bike in an appropriate, legal way) and cars that are aggressive toward both cyclists and pedestrians. Take the crosswalk on Wall St at Temple for instance--it's incredible the speed of cars here and their failure to yield to peds in the crosswalk. As peds and cyclists we end up fighting over the scraps left behind by a history of kow-towing to cars. Proper bike lanes and tamed vehicle traffic would cut down on a lot of the sidewalk riding in New Haven. See other college towns like David, CA, Madison, WI, etc.

Cyclists should be fined for riding on the sidewalks. I encounter bikes on the sidewalk everyday walking on Whitney from the Peabody museum to Edwards street.

Safety is a top priority. As New Haven makes streets safer for bikers, the sidewalks will become less of an option for them. Many New Haven streets are not safe for bikers. There are a number of obstacles in lanes they would use and many cars do not give them space.

This is an amazingly annoying a dangerous issue!! Bike riders dont just ride on sidewalks, they come up behind walkers and scare the crap out of us and occasionally inflict injury!! My daughter has been hit in the elbow countless times and I was tripped right by YNHH !!! The city put out stickers on crosswalks because these people cant seem to figure out crosswalks so now put out stickers telling these poor fools to GET OFF THE SIDEWALKS!!! Sometimes when someone acts like a 3 yr. old u have to treat them like 3 yr olds!!!
