It's crazy that there is no crosswalk here. The request may have been posted to SeeClickFix 5 years ago but the issue is decades old. This is a no-brainer. Commissioner Fiandaca, install a crosswalk at this bus stop/T station!!!
This particular spot is tough because of the way the road comes up over a hill (bridge) and then back down. When you're driving, you crest that hill with less lead-time to see pedestrians in the road. For that reason it's really not a good place for a pedestrian to be crossing. A crosswalk may help, so long as pedestrians always cross only on the crosswalk, but there is some risk that encouraging pedestrians to cross there may lull them into a false sense of security. It's much safer to walk down to the base of the hill at Beacon Street where there is an existing crosswalk and lights, or to cross at the existing crosswalks by Landmark Center were Riverway comes in, both of which are at the safer lower bases of the bridge.
This is an excellent idea. I have jaywalked here MANY times, and not just to get to the Green Line—if you need to cross Park Drive, it's easiest at this point. From here, Park Drive southbound curves right toward the Riverway; the official crossing at the bottom of the hill (per C's comment) is easily three times longer and requires you to wait for three lights which appear timed for much more traffic volume than I have ever seen at that point. I know the City is still trying to get its head around the idea of pedestrians-first transpo planning, but let's make it happen here. The issue of cars cresting the hill is easily solved with a warning flasher or a speed bump installed before cars reach the crest of the hill as they come up from Audubon Circle.
I’ve been aware of this issue since I’ve been living in the area for over 20 years. Crossing on top of the bridge is done by folks but I don’t think a crosswalk would make it safer. Driver visibility is not good because of the hill. It’s also probably not warranted based on national standards for a new crosswalk. A crosswalk may add a false sense of safety and actually be less safe for pedestrians. There should be stairs and an elevator on both sides of the bridge down to the Fenway station. It should have been mitigation for development at the Landmark Center.
