Description
The change in red lights for Marconi and Windward has created a major traffic jam for thousands of workers trying to exit Marconi onto Windward. The intersections are being blocked, driveways of businesses and the traffic is getting backed up into business parking lots creating total gridlock. The red light timing needs to be reviewed to alleviate this issue that has only recently occurred in the last month.

The City has not made any timing adjustments to the signals along Windward Parkway.
The significant change to the traffic patterns along the Windward Corridor are the direct result of the Georgia Department of Transportation's (GDOT) decision to open the right shoulder of GA400 to thru traffic during peak commute periods. This has greatly increased the volume of vehicles hitting Windward at the same time to the point that the capacity of Windward Parkway has been greatly exceeded.
Unfortunately, the issue cannot be resolved through signal timing, as there are simply more cars trying to use the roadway than it can handle.
Further, while the City is pursuing a project that would provide an additional westbound travel lane between GA400 and State Route 9, the addition of the volume resulting from opening the shoulder of GA400 will all but nullify the positive impacts of the additional capacity on Windward that our project would provide.
The City is working to identify additional alternatives to help mitigate the situation. There are not, however, any quick fixes to this issue.
