Being at the corner, this stop does serve a lot of bus riders. Many of them do stand dangerously close to the road. The homeowner's fence doesn't allow a lot of room for standing.

It's important to note that this intersection is slated to become a four-way stop as part of the Brookside South traffic calming project. Traffic will have to stop here instead of roaring past. While this doesn't make more room for bus riders, it should make it much safer to wait for the bus.

I'll pass this on to our CAT staff for their consideration. When they have had a chance to respond I'll post an update.

Good point Mark. I think with the curb bump-outs it should give more room for bus riders to stand. The problem is that these changes seem to take so many years to actually happen. Maybe someone has a short term easy solution in the mean time. Maybe move the stop a little?

Thanks for addressing City of Raleigh. I also noticed today that in addition to having no sidewalk access, there is a utility pole and a fire hydrant in the shoulder that block access to the stop, pretty much forcing people to walk on the road to get to the stop. I'm not familiar with the bus route, but maybe a temporary move to the north west side of the intersection would provide more space for the stop. It is my understanding that the work on the Brookside / Glascock calming efforts won't start until summer 2013. So glad that the stop will become a 4 way stop...I walk my 5 year old to Conn every day and can count on one hand the number of times that cars (and school buses) actually waited patiently for us to cross.

I am still not exactly for the removal of the stop light at brookside and glascock. Changing it to a 4 way stop will just encourage folks to "run" a stop sign..I forsee crashes tripling at this intersection in the future..as I can see this intersection from my window.

as for the bus stop..yeah a better idea is to move it to the 500 block of glascock..before the creek bed. it has much more potential to be safer there, with the posibility of an added shelter!

sorry let me clear up confusion..an extended red light for the crosswalk( providing a "walk" light with a red light to traffic) AND adding NO TURN ON RED ANYTIME, would be a much better solution to the problem here than the outright removal of the stop light.

Staff has field checked the stop at IB Glascock and Brookside. We also ran the daily average ridership at this stop to see if it qualifies for an upgrade based on city standards. The average daily ridership at this stop is 4 boardings a day. Based on our current standards, this stop does not qualify for a bench or a shelter. However, after surveying the conditions at this stop, staff will be moving this stop to a more suitable and safer location. A notification will be placed at the stop tomorrow (11/29) notifying passengers of the impending change. A one week time period is needed for adequate notification before the stop is moved. After that period, the stop will be moved on Friday December, 7th. The stop will be moved to a location that is not impacted by neither a storm drain nor the fence as is present at the current location. The new location will be in the direct vicinity of the current stop. Since this area does not have sidewalk present on the north side of the street, staff has added this stop to its list of improvements to provide a concrete landing area.
