Some of the most attractive cities in the US have public markets, where people runs stalls selling fine local products. This is exactly what New Haven needs, considering the lack of shopping downtown and the great diversity of people living here.

Some of the markets that do best have specialties from different cultural groups representing the local population, like the markets in San Antonio, LA, and Cleveland, as well as the brand new market that just opened in Pittsburgh.
