People will race upon the Shiawassee River in the 7th annual Shiawassee River Paddle Event held in Holly, Michigan on June 5th, 2011

Byron Lane - Chief, Hydrologic Studies and Dam Safety Unit at State of Michigan - confirmation as of July 2012 that the owner of the Shiatown Dam intends to remove the dam and is currently in the planning phase of removal. - Great News ! - this antiquated, outdated, crumbling, dangerous relic of a bygone era will disappear from the landscape allowing the river to run free.

Looking forward to the day its gone

The work on the Shiatown Dam dam is confined to lowering two or three of the four gates by 4.5 feet to drop the reservoir and open the dam to most river flow conditions--not a dramatic event as seen elsewhere. Another phase next year will open the dam to larger flow conditions. The entire earthen portion of the dam and much of the concrete superstructure will still be evident. Fish connectivity and I believe navigability will ultimately be achieved. The local coordinator of the project is the Friends of the Shiawassee River that acts a a sub-contractee of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The de-construction contractor is SL&H out of Corunna, Michigan.

Work has progressed nicely. Look forward to the completion of the project in 2016+. An open waterway for transportation both ways, upstream and downstream.
