Description
There are NO sidewalks on Woodward Avenue leading to Hannah's Dream, baseball fields & East Shore Park. There is a lot of construction here, why can't these kids get sidewalks to utilize the million dollar projects here?? It's as unsafe as those round a bouts!! UGH! Please help the kids of New Haven be able to use these wonderful parks. THey do no service to the community if the children from local schools & daycares can't access them safely. It's impossiable to walk thru the swampgrass without knee high boots on! The construction trucks have been there daily for a year-throw in some sidewalks!

I agree! The lack of sidewalks is ridiculous. Come on- Hannah's Dream is a park for HANDICAPPED kids. What good is a handicapped concrete apron that leads NOWHERE except to the grass area like the one at Woodward and Hervey? Across the street, corner of Woodward and Hervey, the handicap apron gets flooded when it rains because the SEWER is ON Hervey St around the corner from the apron! I love these engineers that plan these things on PAPER, but mostly likely NEVER view their work in the REAL WORLD!
Maybe our taxes aren't high enough in the East Shore for sidewalks? Maybe after the UNANNOUNCED "independent" assessments of our property we'll have enough money for some sidewalks.

Last year, I proposed to the East Shore Neighborhood Management Team that the City install sidewalks along Fort Hale Park Rd and down Woodward Ave to the end of the park. It was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

The poster and the request was passed along to the City. I spoke with Bob Levine in the Dept. of Parks & Rec, who has since retired, and he was enthusiastic about the idea, though he felt that it would need to be modified due to some logistical concerns. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of it.
I also spoke with Dick Miller (City Engineer), who indicated that it would be difficult to put sidewalks along Ft. Hale Park Rd., which is (a) very narrow already and has steep sides and (b) partially owned by the State. Regardless, the central issue, as far as he was concerned, was that his current directive from the City was to maintain the sidewalks that currently exist and NOT to build new sidewalks. To do so would require special appropriation from the Board of Alderman.
It seems the best bet would be to approach the Parks & Rec department about this in order to (at least) put in sidewalks -- or perhaps a smooth and wide dirt path -- along the park-side of Woodward Ave. A smooth dirt path could also be created across the grassy field on the northwest corner of Townsend Ave. and Ft. Hale Park Rd., so as to create pedestrian access from Townsend down to Ft. Hale Park and the historical site (i.e., the fort itself) and then the current sidewalk would lead onto to East Shore Park.
