Worst intersection design I have ever seen, at the intersection of Route 1 and Cherry Hill Road, which is asking for accidents to happen here. Despite having two left turn lanes, the green lights do not give freedom to make a left hand turn safely from oncoming traffic coming from the small gas station. At worst, the light turning cycle should be improved such that the left lanes have green left turn signals and there should be a separate light at the gas station to allow for safe passage through the intersection. At best, the whole intersection needs to be redesigned.

I have reported this very intersection to SHA and PG County on several occasions, zero action has been taken by either our county or state representatives.
This is extremely disappointing, I expect better responses from our government officials.

This is in further response to your traffic and safety concerns near the subject location in Prince George’s County. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) District Three traffic engineering staff has completed its review, and is writing to provide you with the results.
The MDOT SHA follows the nationally accepted Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as a guideline to determine when and where traffic control devices should be installed. These guidelines are nationwide in scope and are endorsed by the Federal Highway Administration. As a highway operations agency, the MDOT SHA assumes an obligation to follow these guidelines.
We reviewed traffic operations at the subject intersection. Several factors such as traffic count, roadway geometry, peak hour observations, and crash history were taken into consideration. The most recent three-year police-reported crash-data did not reveal a discernible pattern. Our field investigation indicated that motorists along southbound US 1 frequently blocked the intersection. However, according to the MUTCD a “Do Not Block Intersection” sign should only be used at un-signalized intersections with public streets and major driveways where traffic frequently queues across the intersection. As a result, a “Do Not Block Intersection” sign or pavement marking is not recommended due to the location being at a signalized intersection.
The illegal blocking of the intersection by motorists is best addressed through enforcement. By copy of this email we are calling the attention of the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD).
