The intersection at Everit & Cold Spring Streets is a dangerous one. The cars rarely stop for the stop sign- braking only when oncoming traffic decides to go. This pattern makes it an outrageously dangerous situation for our kids walking to school. In addition, the one safety precaution in place-- the crossing guard posted at that spot-- is frequently late and generally leaves even before school starts, so the kids who are running late (and not necessarily paying attention to traffic) are left to fend for themselves. Today, the crossing guard did not show up at all. The question is not IF a child will be hit by a car, but WHEN if this continues.

The issue has three parts: 1. What times are the crossing guards SUPPOSED to be present at their stations? 2. How do we ensure the crossing guard is there during the designated times? 3. What can the police do to make it a reasonably safe place for pedestrians to cross? Please help now.

The Whitney Avenue and Cold Spring Street intersection is equally dangerous for pedestrians, and children especially. Would it be possible to station a crossing guard there as well?

This is a crucial intersection: most of the children in grades 3 - 8 who walk home must cross Cold Spring, and it is a road on which many people drive fast and ignore traffic signals.

Im a dog walkler in the neighborhood. I spend my days walking & crossing the streets, mostly in East Rock. Honestly, even trying to cross Cold Spring (at Foster, Orange, Livingston, or Everett) during rush hour is extremely dangerous. Same thing with Willow Street at any hour of the day.

This intersection is scary in a car never mind as a pedestrian. It is crucial that something be done at this and other busy intersections across the city to prevent a child from being hurt or even killed. Drivers do not come to complete stops and at times just run the stop sign. Who do we need to get in touch with to rectify this issue? Is the board of ed, traffic and parking? Can we have some guidance please. Thank you.

We need help on this. Today was a great example were the guard was missing in the first part of the morning and only present at the school exit time.

I noticed another afternoon recently at Cold Spring and Everit when school kids were crossing around 3 p.m., that there was no crossing guard in sight. That is also the corner where a car hit my husband on his bike a few years ago. I know people roll the stop signs there quite frequently.

Cold Spring St residents met with Director of Traffic and Parking last year about this; the proposed solution was to create a bump out and repost the stop signs at the bump-out edges on the Cold Spring sides. This will make the stop signs more visible to drivers and narrow the road width, which should help reduce speeds and make drivers more vigilant. Also proposed: striping parking spots, which serves to visually narrow the street; and placing raised islands at the Liv/CS and Everit/CS 4 way intersections (similar to Edwards/Liv). To reduce volume (and illegal semis cutting through to Whitney from the highway) it was proposed to close Exit 6 off of I-91. None of the proposals have been acted upon to date.

Willow st. car sewer (Panauhin)

Close I91 exit 6, or use eminent domain to demolish all of the structures, on Willow St. and turn Willow into a four lane expressway, to Whitney Ave.
Willow St. is basically a high speed [when it's not jammed with cars] automobile sewer, for suburban commuters. There's a reason that property values, on Willow, are so low, compared to the rest of East Rock - Willow St. is ruined by cars, car noise, and car pollution.

Thanks for the post. The Traffic Enforcement Division will look into this issue. I will assign the motor unit to conduct traffic enforcement in this area very shortly. I do not have any information concerning the crossing guards.

Thank you, NHPD, for your response! It is very much appreciated. The worst time seems to be the morning commute, if that helps prioritize when traffic enforcement is positioned there.
