I'm surprised no one's been run over at this intersection. Drivers turning right onto Cedar routinely see the green bicycle symbol as a green light and turn, even though the arrow is red. It happens so often that you have to conclude the marking is confusing and/or ineffective.

Tom Corvid--Good point. People don't sit at intersections and read symbols. I live in the neighborhood and drivers who have been here for decades say they never noticed they were bike symbols. I heard that the green bike lights were suggested by an Arlington teenager. Maybe we should have vetted the idea first through testing.

I just came back from visiting my grandson in Arlington. As I was inching my way from Dunkin Donut to Cedar Street, I counted 10 cars whizzing by the Mass Ave on the Bus Only lane while there was only one cyclist, at least ones I could see. Most of those cars got stuck at the red light at Cedar Street intersection. So, what were their hurry?

NC Resident--At the same time you were at the Dunkin Donut I was at the Med Grille. The only three cyclists I saw were riding on the sidewalk. No one was in the bike lane.

This is a horriblly designed intersection and it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. In defense of drivers turning right on Cedar from MA Ave, the green bicycle light is confusing. I make this right every day, and when the light goes from red to a green bicycle light, I always start the turn before catching myself. Maybe if the bicycle light turned green AFTER the vehicle arrow turns from green to red it would help. Also, it's not clear when it's legal to get into the bus lane to make a right. I've seen vehicles turn right onto Cedar from the left lane because they're afraid of going to the bus lane. The approach to the intersection outbound is much better marked. There are bus lane and right turn arrows painted on the lanes a full block before Cameron Ave. Clear markings like this on the opposite side would guide motorists so they know when it's OK to get into the bus lane to make the right onto Cedar.
