Today, at the 8 AM hour, I waited through 11 light cycles at Harrison Ave/Reedy Creek Road and Harrison Ave/Cary Parkway. The light is green for Northbound Harrison traffic for 31 seconds, enough to let 15-17 vehicles through, while estimated 120 cars are backed up all the way to the bottom of the hill on Harrison Ave, and all the back to the school zone on Reedy Creek Road. How can you folks NOT see that this is a major problem? I just do not understand. Requested me to call someone else as you recommend above should be the function of the folks that run this web site. I've have pointed out the issue several times so it seems that you folks would have the initiative to take whatever action is necessary to follow through and see that the issue is addressed. Further, if anyone wants to see the issue simply drive from down Cary at 8 AM or so and head Northbound on Harrison. You cannot miss it!

To clarify the above, the light is green for 31 seconds on Northbound Harrison at the intersection with Cary Parkway. At the Reedy Creek Road intersection, which is 1/5 of a mile further South on Harrison, the North bound traffic light is green for about 86 seconds, but the traffic cannot move because of the shorter green light at the Cary Parkway intersection. So, we have one light that is 3 times as long as the other one…???

We are aware of the issue at this intersection but the fix is not as easy as giving Harrison Ave more time. There is a camera at this intersection and we can monitor it from the Traffic Management Center and have tried several adjustments in the past to try to help alleviate this issue. First let me say you are correct with the green times you reported with the Reedy Creek and Cary Pkwy signals but we run the same cycle length at both intersections. The main problem with Cary Pkwy signal is Cary Academy and more specifically the SB left turn. The school starts at 8am therefore most parents are dropping the kids off during the AM peak traffic times and using all the time programmed for that SB left turn. We are also dealing with parents using Cary Pkwy going through Harrison Ave into Cary Academy. The way the signal operates is if the time that is programmed for that SB left turn or EB through movement is not used, then that time goes back to the main street (Harrison Ave). The Reedy Creek signal usually does not use all it’s time for Reedy Creek and gives the extra time back to Harrison Ave. We know this is a consistent 15 minute problem during the AM while school is in session.
